This work was taken over a period of five years, when I was an artist in residence in St. Remy and a professor of photography in Lacoste.
The place is inspirational… the light awe inspiring… the people…  the food… the wine….
This is my breath of fresh air.

Her large (36”x36”) photo encaustics capture a scenescape rich with Civil War and Civil Rights history. Midway is an autobiographical, coming of age show that juxtaposes the death of the artist's father with the birth of her children. The photographs – encased in a combination of wax, resin, and varnish – embody a deep Southern community with a fading story.

I am Midway.
Where time stands still, if just for a moment.
Where black and white co-exist only in photograph.
I become the bridge spanning one generation to another.
I embrace the vast spaces stripped bare of time and place.
The fear of losing freedom gives way to a desire to be rooted.
Where white churches stand tall and historic relics crumble.
There lives both good and evil.
I will preserve it in wax.

The Boneyard is a deserted beach off the coast of Georgia on Ossabaw Island where the trees are slowly eroding into the sea. I went there after my father lost his long battle with cancer, after the birth of my first son, and, unbeknownst to me, shortly after my second son’s conception.

Beginning at the age of seven, I learned about Judaism three days a week.  One ever-present theme in my course of study was the Holocaust.  Very little of this atrocious period was left out to those of us who carry on its legacy.  I remember the books, the movies, and the survivors with their numbers forever tattooed on their arms.

As openly as the Jewish community mourned the victims, my family kept hidden our own loss.  It was not until my Great Uncle Bernard’s journal of his trip to Poland in 1934 was unearthed, typed, and given to me that I understood my personal connection with the Holocaust.  Three centuries of Makovers had lived in Poland.  My great grandparents, great aunts and uncles, their children and their children’s children lived there until 1939, when the Nazis invaded Poland and the trail of information abruptly stopped.  They seemingly disappeared, never to be heard again.

In 2000, I traveled alone to Poland for eight months, with Great Uncle Bernard’s journal as my companion, searching for information to fill in the gaps in my own history.  I traveled through the abandoned synagogues, the desecrated cemeteries and the concentration camps.  My stories, thus my photographs, speak of the death that surrounded me and of the ghosts that spoke to me.

I was born into an intricate web of powerful women and complex relationships.  The women, an industrious group, spun their webs with passion, pain, and love.  Their mosaic was a delicate one, with three marriages by each of my parents, there were many separate designs containing different religions, backgrounds and ages within each generation.  As the youngest within the web, I was confused at the complexities that had been created before my birth and haunted by the secrets that youth shielded me from.  When college beckoned, I pulled myself free to spin my own web.

It wasn’t until I was at the furthest point from home, in the Middle East, that I realized I had jumped too far ahead of myself; I needed to return home to research the child’s pain with my adult eyes.  What ensued was this project:  photographs of three generations of women:  my Mom, my sisters, and my nieces.

It was from feelings of loneliness and alienation that questions arose, which lead me to shoot; the work is conceived in the search for answers.  Photography enabled me to look at the tangled web of my family as a human might look at a newly woven spider’s web that shimmers in the light.
